Craniosacral Therapy

and how it can help you

Craniosacral Therapy is a gentle, hands-on technique used to detect and correct imbalances in the craniosacral system, which may be the cause of neurological, sensory, motor or mental dysfunction.

The craniosacral system consists of membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surround and protect the brain and spinal cord. It extends from the bones of the skull – which make up the cranium – down to the sacrum or the tailbone area.

The work is light touch so, not a massage nor manual manipulation. Therapist tunes into the bodies subtle rhythms, called tides which in turn allows palpation of the many levels and systems of the body-mind-spirit. The safe, gentle touch and relational presence, activates cell to cell communication that orientates to the body’s own innate intelligence, which knows what it needs to do to resolve and heal.

The work can include working directly with central nervous system, heart, cerebral spinal fluid (and it’s passive pumping systems), meninges and , hormones, immune, muscular skeletal fascial patterning strains, birth patterns, blood cranial/neck/vertebrae/sacral compression etc., - anywhere that shock and internal ‘armouring’ is located.

Our role is quite different to many other complementary therapists (assess-fix-reassess model), because; Craniosacral therapists ' listen' to your body and trust in its intelligence for finding balance (homeostasis) and correct itself. Listening alone, in a safe environment is often all that it needed to unlock whatever the root problem was that was causing your symptoms. Occasionally, we may augment and facilitates your intrinsic rhythms that lead to profound healing.

Our framework is unlike the medical model, (used by NHS). Craniosacral therapy works with your wholeness body-mind-emotions-mental-spiritual as a whole "being-ness" and is orientation to your health.

The session will begin with sitting together and having a brief discussion. (If it is the first session, we would go through your case history)

This part is important part of the treatment experience to help you 'arrive' and orient to how you are feeling.

We would talk also things that give you a sense of 'okayness' or things that bring some happiness into your life. We track this to a felt sense in the body, known as ‘resources’.

You would be invited to remove your shoes - and lay down on a comfortable couch, on your back. I would offer you a 'cosy' blanket for comfort.

I then would stand at the side and after a few words and moments, go towards the feet. After more 'settling' there at your feet, I may move to a number of possible hand holds, especially the cranium and sacrum.

People experience different things during their sessions; examples include their fascia moving around on its own, muscles letting go of tension, heat or cold sensations, emotions coming up and twitching movements. There is not a lot talking, but of course if you would like to share your emerging experiences as they are happening in your body, great! Sometimes, I might suggest a breath to help you access the feelings in your body...or re orient to the present moment. This is especially likely for those of you that find yourself are "in your head" a lot!

The treatment room is spacious, light and airy. Candles.

Clean cotton to cover couch and pillows.

Water and toilet facilities will be available throughout.

Foot stool for those a bit shorter. Couch adjustments can be made to support larger frame, comfort.

Extra pillows and blankets are also available.

What to expect during a treatment session

A woman with blonde hair is lying on a table with her eyes closed, her head resting on a pillow, while a woman with curly hair stands next to her with her eyes closed. The scene appears to be a holistic or therapy session, with candles and a potted plant nearby and certificates on the wall near a window with leafy green outside.
